AMS Announcement 09/23/2025

Hello, Avalon Middle School parents and guardians.

Today, we conducted our monthly safety drill and practiced what students should do in the event there is ever a need to lockdown during lunch or breakfast, when students are in the cafeteria. While we hope we never have to experience one, we practice safety drills each month, either in the form of a lockdown drill, fire drill, severe weather drill or shelter-in-place. We have had three drills so far this year and will have another during October, and each month thereafter.
• Avalon Middle School now has an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and a membership form will go home with your child this Friday afternoon (9/26). Please support our students and teachers by joining the AMS PTO. Applications and funds can return to your child’s first period teacher.
• We have held our first School Advisory Council meeting, and you can find all the necessary documents on our school website, including the date and time of our next SAC Meeting, Tuesday, November 18th @ 8:00 AM.
• Next Wednesday, October 1st, is our annual Fall Picture Day. Please visit our school website of social media page for instructions on how to sign up and purchase pictures online at GulfSouthPix.com. All students will have pictures made for the AMS Yearbook.
• The AMS Beta Club will continue to accept food items for our annual Beta Food Drive until this Friday, 9/26.
• This link will take you to our annual Title 1 Parent Engagement Survey. The Title I Parent Survey A will be available beginning Monday, September 22nd and will close on Friday, October 6th. https://forms.office.com/r/fXFaVXigwm

AMS Announcement 09/18/2025

Hello, Avalon Middle School parents and guardians.

Our first round of Progress Monitoring tests are behind us and our students and teachers did a great job. Dr. Blue may call your child out of their scheduled classes if they are involved in make-up testing. I have a few important announcements that will likely impact your children or already has.
• First, tomorrow morning’s Cross-Country practice has been cancelled. We do wish our Cross-Country teams the very best as they compete this afternoon. I know they will represent Avalon well.
• Second, if your child is a walker, please remind them to be very careful as they are making their way to and from school. We ask that walker students enter and exit closer to the bus ramp, as the traffic is much heavier closer to the front of the school building.
• Next Tuesday evening is our BETA Induction Ceremony. If your child has brought home an invite, please join us at 6:00 PM for our celebration.
• Avalon Middle School now has an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and I have included a social media QR code & link where you can connect with them and support our school.
• We have passed the first quarter mid-term point (last Wednesday, 9/10. Please keep track of your child’s academic performance and reach out to their teachers, if necessary, as soon as possible.
• I have also included a graphic to assist you and your child with connecting to their teachers via ROOMS.

We thank you for a great start to the year. Next week, I will send home a Title 1 Parent Survey link and look forward to receiving your feedback. We will continue to work together to push our students to achieve their fullest potential.

Thank you and Go KNIGHTS!

AMS Update, 09/18/2025
2025-2026 School Year

Dear Avalon Middle School Families,

This information is to inform you of Florida State Board of Education statute related to required instruction in health education topics for students in Grades K-12. Florida Statute 1003.42 requires school districts to develop a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and developmentally appropriate K-12 instruction for various topics including suicide prevention, substance use and abuse prevention, dating violence, abstinence, resiliency, and child trafficking prevention education.

In accordance with Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.094124, Required Instruction Planning and Reporting requires school districts to annually provide a minimum of five (5) hours of data-driven instruction to students in grades 6-12 related to civic and character education and life skills education through resiliency using the health education standards, including the social, emotional, and physical effects of social media.

To meet these mandatory state requirements, our school district utilizes an online program, Navigate 360/Compass Curriculum, which contains lessons created by experts in the field and cover grade level mandated topics in an appropriate, interactive manner. Lessons are presented in an online format and may be presented either individually, in whole, or small groups. Families have access to view all lessons by logging in through the student portal under the Clever app where the Compass Curriculum app resides. It is important to note and reiterate that this requirement is mandated by the Florida State Board of Education, and these lessons will be presented to all secondary students in our district, including Dual Enrollment students and any student participating virtual learning.

Avalon Middle will begin presenting these lessons to our students this Thursday, 9/18. We will present one lesson a month until the month of March when we will have covered all required material.

Thank you and Go KNIGHTS!
