AMS 5th grade Band
This is the newest performing group for Avalon Middle School. Students from Bennett Russell Elementary meet on Monday & Wednesday mornings from 7:00 – 7:50 a.m. to learn fundamentals on flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone. They perform 2-3 times per year.
AMS Beginner Band
This is the entry level ensemble/class for all students at Avalon Middle School. It is open to students in grades 6-8 and meets daily as part of the school curriculum. Students learn fundamentals on flute, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. They perform 2-3 times per year.
AMS Jazz Band
This group is open to any current AMS student in 7th or 8th grade student as a secondary band class. Students learn and perform various styles in the Jazz/Big Band genre including swing, rock, funk, Latin, and Pop. Instruments include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, and drum set. They perform 2 formal concerts each year and serve as ambassadors for AMS at several public venues throughout the school year upon invitation. They annually perform for the Florida Bandmasters Association Jazz Music Performance Assessment, the Northwest Florida Jazz Festival, and Jazz in the Park in Ft. Walton Beach. The class meets daily as part of the school curriculum.
AMS Concert Band
This is the Intermediate ensemble at Avalon Middle School. It is open to students after completion of Beginner Band. Typically, this group performs 2 public concerts per year while also focusing on development of fundamentals and musicianship. The class meets daily as part of the school curriculum. Students continue to hone skills on traditional wind band instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone/baritone, tuba, and percussion.
AMS Symphonic Band
This is the advanced/premiere ensemble at Avalon Middle School. It is open to students who have completed Beginner Band and show an advanced skill level among their peers. The class meets daily as part of the school curriculum. Instrumentation includes traditional wind band instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone/baritone, tuba, and percussion. The Symphonic Band performs 2 formal concerts per year. In addition, the group performs for the AMS Veterans Day Assembly and the Florida Bandmasters Association Concert Band Music Performance Assessment. Each year, members of this ensemble earn selection to the Santa Rosa County All-County Band and Florida All-State Band.
